TCPDump Fails

By Jeffrey Howard

The title for this IAQ entry is vague, I know. I'm quite sure that TCPDump can fail any number of ways from the command line if your configuration is bogus. There is one in particular that I'm thinking of here, though. TCPDump fails with the error:

tcpdump: socket: Socket type not supported

Platform

This problem struck just after I'd upgraded a RedHat 6.0 system to kernel version 2.2.11.

Solution

This error was, in my case, an indication of a missing line from /etc/modules.conf. Try adding the following:

alias net-pf-17 af_packet

The alias should be enough for TCPDump to find the module it needs.
